About Prayer

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  Philippians 4:6  (NRSV)

Prayer is simply conversation with God.  Prayer is talking to God just like you would talk to your best friend.  Prayer gives Jesus access to our needs and permits Him to use His own power in dealing with them.

Often we're not sure about how to pray.  Even the disciples who spent a lot of time with Jesus had to ask, "Lord, teach us to pray."  And Jesus gave the model prayer we call the Lord's Prayer.  Praying is something we can learn to do.  Many of us are helped by having models for our praying.

One simple and widely known model is built on the acronym ACTS.

A - - Adoration.  Praise God for being faithful, righteous, just, merciful, gracious, willing to provide, attentive, unchanging.

C - - Confession.  Name each sin and ask for forgiveness.

T - - Thanksgiving.  Thank God for your many blessings.

S - - Supplication.  Humbly pray for your needs and the needs of others.

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.

NRSV JAMES 5:13-16 THE PRAYER OF FAITH
